Criterion E: Evaluate

Criterion E: Evaluate
I enjoyed learning about creating career plans and taping a university entrance video. Overall, I think that my result, which was a video, turned out quite well. I managed to include necessary information without making it too long. While editing my video, I figured out how to use Windows Movie Maker and managed to create a well thought out video. Although there was one word cut off near the end of the video, no matter how much I tried to edit it, it wouldn’t be heard clearly. I also think I could have filmed the clips all at the same time, so that the lighting didn’t change from clip to clip. For an official university entrance video I would try to find a better camera in record with so that my voice doesn’t sound fuzzy or as if I am sick. When I first started filming I had to repeat filming clips because I kept messing up and didn’t feel comfortable talking to a camera. I would probably find it better as a person to person interview with the school, but I understand that sometimes colleges require an entrance video.
I received feedback from Reeza and Jill. They both agreed that the video was good, except in the beginning they thought it was annoying that I shook my head to one side. They said that my pronunciation was clear and I included everything that they thought was necessary. Jill said I sounded like I was sick, but she thought it was the microphone on my webcam. Overall, they thought it was good and not many improvements were suggested.

Criterion A: Investigate (Evaluation)
I found this step in the design cycle to be the hardest out of all the steps because it required you to actually think about your interests and discuss them. In real life, I don’t really think of them as hobbies, its just counted as part of what I do to entertain myself. I’m also more of a personal person and do not like to talk about all my interests in detail. For example, jewelry making, is a hobby of mine, but not many people know about it and I don’t feel comfortable describing in detail why I enjoy it and count it as one of my interests. I’m not sure why I don’t like to, but it’s always nice, in my opinion, to keep some things to yourself that you like to do alone. You were supposed to come up with roughly ten interests and describe why you like them and enjoy them. In the end, I only came up with eight after long thinking. I could have improved by giving at least two more interests and describing all of my hobbies in more detail. While I was completing criterion A, one person asked me why a lot of school subjects were listed as some of my interests. I think it is necessary to be interested in some school subjects, otherwise how are you going to figure out what type of job you want. For example, my strongest subjects are in math and science, so I would try and find an occupation that uses these subjects. Overall, I think it was tough to talk about my interests, but it showed me in a clearer picture of what I was interested in and how it can help me to figure out my future.

Criterion B: Design (Evaluation)
For the design step, we were required to choose an occupation that we would like to do when we are older and figure out what education we need to get there. Also, we needed to find out what would make us successful in that particular business. For this step, I chose an Anesthesiologist because I have been thinking of working in the medicine industry and would like a job that deals with pain. I thought this was the perfect job for what I wanted to do because you get to inject the patients with strong pain medication to relieve their pain. I joined this step with the create step because they were roughly the same. I thought I did a good job on researching for design and I learned a lot of new things on how to reach my future career goal.

Criterion D: Create (Evaluation)
I think I enjoyed this step out of all the other required steps, which included investigate and design. For this I just followed the sample career plan, but created mine about what I have to do in order to become an Anesthesiologist. Personally, I think I did well during this step, but I possibly could have described more in detail of what I have to do. I found it interesting trying to find a college or university suitable to obtain the degrees I need to become a certified Anesthesiologist. Although I found out that I would need to be at school for a long time, I think I am willing to be committed to this to reach my career goal. Overall, I think I specified clearly what requirements and experience I had to have in order to become an Anesthesiologist.

Impact on my life
I think this was a good unit to learn more about reaching your career goals and what you have to do in order to get there. We also learned more about making an entrance video and got to get familiar with what colleges ask and look for, such as volunteer work or interesting hobbies. This will help us later in life to find a suitable college for our needs and help us to realize what type of degrees we need to obtain. Before making an official university entrance video, I think it was good to have the practice with filming and editing the videos, as well as choosing which program we should use.

Develop/Create: Develop and Write a Career Plan

Design/Create: Develop a Career Plan
Career Goal: to be in the medicine industry
More Specific: Orthopedic Surgeon, Rheumatologist, Anesthesiologist, or Physical Therapist

v Anesthesiologist
· Requirements:
o Education - Most of these occupations require graduate school. For example, they may require a master's degree, and some require a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. (law degree).
o Training - Employees may need some on-the-job training, but most of these occupations assume that the person will already have the required skills, knowledge, work-related experience, and/or training.
o Experience - Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for these occupations. Many require more than five years of experience. For example, surgeons must complete four years of college and an additional five to seven years of specialized medical training to be able to do their job.
o Source: http://mappingyourfuture.org/planyourcareer/careership/career_summary.cfm?careerID=364&headerImage=_career_summary

· My Skills and Interests:
o Being in a lot of pain myself, I can sympathize with those in agony and will be able to take it all away from injecting strong pain medication.
o I know the procedure of the injection and what you have to do after the surgery or medical procedure. In this case, you have to monitor the patients before, during, and after the procedure. We all know that complications may arise.
o I’m interested in the medicine industry, especially the occupations to deal with pain.
o I have seen how it is done from relatives being in the hospital for medical procedures and surgeries.

Career Planning

Career Planning

Criterion A: INVESTIGATE

· Think about your interests:

- I have an assortment of interests, some of them more recent than others. In my own time, I take pleasure in learning about animal anatomy and behavior, to be more specific the dog, making jewelry, singing, painting crafted items, such as wooden boxes, and when in Macon, being in the outdoors. At school I enjoy math, science, physical education (although I am not able to do so right now), and humanities.

- 10 (8) Activities I enjoy:

1) sports and exercising in general

2) math

3) science

4) history or humanities

5) training dogs

6) singing

7) making jewelry

8) outdoor activities

1) Sports and exercising in general

- I find doing sports and exercise relaxing, fun, and enjoyable. Just recently I am counted as medically unable to do sports. Every time you play a sport, you always learn something new and it was a regular challenge to play your best. I think just the adrenaline rush of playing sports is enough satisfaction to make it one of my favourite activities.

2) Math

- Although math can sometimes be tough, I find it useful in life and depending on what it is, fun. I find math to be a necessity for my future. This is one of my best subjects in school and I enjoy helping others learning hard math concepts. Math is all around us and it can be useful in almost any situation, which is why it is counted as an activity I enjoy.

3) Science

- Science is not always enjoyable, but overall it becomes handy and useful. Science involves math, so those classes go together and use each other. Once again, this is another of my best subjects and I plan to use both science and math for my future career, which is why I think I should enjoy doing these activities. I like hands on activities and so this is one of the few classes which you get to experiment rather than reading a text book over and over. In science there are always new concepts and things to learn, so you can never be too good at science. I think part of why I like this activity is that its on going learning and science surrounds us everywhere.

4) History or Humanities

- Compared to math or science, I don’t enjoy this subject a lot, but I thought it would be enough to count it as one of the activities I enjoy. As everyone knows or says, history shapes our future, so I think it’s a necessity to know some history. My brothers both love learning about history, especially WWI and WWII, so I think I’m kind of tied in to liking it as well. It’s not such a bad thing to know and I do enjoy it somewhat just because it’s good to know what has happened in the past.

5) Training dogs/learning about behavior etc.

- This is a topic that I can go on and on about. It has also been a topic that I have loved and enjoyed over many years (probably the activity that has been around the longest). I think animals in general are quite fascinating and its fun to learn about their anatomy and figure out why they do the things they do. I’ve trained most dogs in our extended family and I have a stack of dog books all about their anatomy and behavior. People sometimes say im obsessed with them, but I just count it as a passion as mine that I enjoy very much.

6) Singing

- Although I have never sang in public except once or twice, I enjoy this much more than people know. A lot of my free time includes singing and I enjoy music in general. I think it gives me adrenaline and makes me happy in general. For this activity I don’t really know why I enjoy it, but I do.

7) Making jewelry

- This activity will count as my art activity. I haven’t been too interested in it lately, but for the past few years I have learned many new techniques. I think I enjoy making jewelry because it is something I am good and capable of doing. Also, I can wear it and its unique and one-of-a-kind.

8) Outdoor Activities

- In Macon, Georgia, I enjoy going out in the woods behind my house. There is all kinds of wildlife and also a creek. I love going down to the creek with my brothers and jumping in the water or climbing rocks. I may seem a bit old for this, but I find it enjoyable and fun. Since my brothers also like outdoor activities, it gives me some time to spend with my brothers because we never really do that much together.

Careers I have been thinking about:

1) Optometrists: Diagnoses and treats the human visual eye system. I think I would enjoy this because it is a fascinating and it involves science, one of my favourite subjects.

2) Physical Therapist: Help to rehabilitate patients to relieve them of pain, help make them more mobile, or increase strength. I think I would enjoy this because I have gone to physical therapy for 9 months and I believe I would enjoy their job helping others.

3) Pharmacist: Give patients medication from their prescriptions. I know someone who is a pharmacist. I have no reason for wanting to do this, but I believe I would enjoy it.

4) Anesthesiologist: Gives patients strong pain killers and puts them to sleep before surgery and other medical procedures. I would enjoy this occupation because I have been in a lot of physical pain, so I would like to take people out of theirs.

5) Rheumatologist: a doctor who specializes in treating joint pain. Just like the anesthesiologist occupation I would like to be a rheumatologist because it deals with joint pain, which all goes back to my joint pain.

6) Orthopedic Surgeon: a surgeon of the bones. This one deals with bones as well and I think it would be a fun occupation.

I have enjoyed being part of soccer teams at Northbridge International School of Cambodia (NISC), Mount de Sales Academy (MDS), and the International School of Ulaanbaatar (ISU). I also spent one season on the basketball team at the International School of Brussels (ISB). Other after school activities have included photography (ISU), backstage (ISU), fruit carving (NISC), candle-making (NISC), guitar lessons (NISC) and gymnastics (ICS and NISC). I have also learned to play a number of musical instruments including the piano, the flute, and the violin. For the past 8 years I have studied French and here and there I have also taken language courses in Spanish, Khmer, Mongolian, and Arabic. I love studying animals and their behavior, to be more specific the dog, and I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel of my own. Other interests of mine are travelling and making jewelry.

My volunteer work has consisted for raising funds for piglets to be given to poor families in Cambodia, and also visiting and playing at an orphanage with HIV positive children. At Mount de Sales Academy I helped raise funds for a diaper drive, different orphanages, and buying canned foods to be given to a homeless shelter. I also took part in fundraising for service trips at the International School of Brussels, including one to the Ukraine, where the students would help construct and paint orphanage buildings.

My Script

April 1st E! Today

Host: Welcome to E! Today, an exciting celebrity program which brings you the latest gossip! I am Chelsea Handler and I will be your host on this fantastic spring day, April 1st, 2010. Have you heard the latest news? (Referring to the viewers)

“Audience” (recorded scream): NOO!

Host: You haven’t? Well, I will be updating you about all the dirt I have on Borachio! Sooo (trying to hold the suspense longer)...the scoop is that Borachio, Conrade, and Don John plotted a scheme against Claudio and Hero to put their wedding into shambles. Oooo (excited tone of voice), guess what? Our phones are ringing off the hook! Let’s take a call from Becky Andola from Arkansas. Please go ahead!

Becky Andola: Yes, I was (quizzical voice) wondering… I heard Margaret was involved in this mischief. Is this true?

Host: Well, actually she had no idea what she was drawn into that night on Hero’s balcony. It is known that Borachio and Margaret have a little something something smiling and cheerful voice going on with one another.

Becky Andola: O ok. Awesome! For a moment there I actually believed the Gossip! Magazine.

Host: Yes, that magazine can be unreliable at times. (Giggles a little. Smiling.) Anyways, back to business! It is now known, only the truth on E! Today, that the night before their wedding Claudio was taken to see “Hero” (showing the inverted comas with her fingers) and another man together. Although this ended up being false, Claudio did not (says the word “not” with emphasis) find out until after he disgraced Hero at the altar.

Host: So, we have an awesome video recorded by one of the “villains,” Conrade, leaked onto YouTube. Please watch and enjoy this clip of Borachio, Conrade himself, and Don John talking about creating mischief upon the intended marriage.

Video Clip Playing:

Conrade (while holding the camera): So, this is documentary day 1 of the great Borachio, Don John, and I! (Should sound forceful, strong, and somewhat evil)

Don John: What’s new, Borachio?

Borachio: I’ve just had a wonderful dinner hosted by Leonato, which your brother also attended. I have some news on an upcoming marriage.

Don John: I wonder… can we have some fun with this?

--Pause Video Clip—

Host: Hear that? Mimicks… “can we have come fun with this?” Wow, that’s a shocker!

Video Clip Playing:

Don John: Who’s marrying who?

Borachio: Well… Claudio and Hero, who is the daughter of Leonato.

Don John: Hmmm… Interesting. How did you hear this?

Borachio: As I was alone, I spotted the Prince and Claudio in deep conversation. I quickly hid behind the furniture and overheard their talk on how the Prince will court Hero and then give her to Claudio.

Don John: Come, come… I can teach that youngster a lesson. It is my duty and my pleasure to do so. Will you both assist me?

Conrade: Of course, Don John!

Don John: Let us attend the dinner! If I look sad, they will feel happy, while I’m developing a devious plan.

--Video Clip stops—

Host: So, as you can see from this YouTube clip, it is clear that Borachio, Conrade, and Don John want to create havoc! Let us take another call from the viewers!

Host: Hello, um…Lindsey Scott from Florida, what is your question or comment?

Lindsey Scott: Heyy! I just can’t believe this is exactly what happened! (Shocked voice) I think it’s outrageous that anyone would think of such a thing, but if it had to be anybody, count on Don John to think of it!

Host: Thank you for your comment and I am quite sure other people doth think the same! (Chuckles) Stay tuned for the rest of the scoop…We will be right back after the break!

--Advertisements playing—

Host: And here we are again, back to the latest scandal! I have some more juicy gossip to be watched, so let’s continue.

Video Clip Playing:

Don John: The truth is revealed! Claudio will marry Hero, Leonato’s daughter.

Borachio: Yess! Let’s make more mischief on this!

Conrade: Dude, Don John...Borachio, the camera ain’t working no more! (A few laughs)

--A few minutes later the camera taping works—

Borachio: We will make this wedding a shambles. We will tell Don Pedro and Claudio to tell them Hero loves me. I’m sure they will fall for our trickery no matter what, and if not… we will tell them to come to Hero’s balcony and they will see me calling Margaret as Hero! This will show Claudio she is a “disloyal brat” (evil laugh) that will stop this marriage.

Host: Do you see how this scandal is escalating? What kind of people do this! Apparently Borachio, Don John, and Conrade! Keep watching for the next video clip!

Video Clip Playing:

Claudio: Do you know of any impediment to this marriage? If so, tell me!

Don John: I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I have heard some interesting tid bits about your bride to be. You may think I don’t care about you, but truly, I am only thinking of your own good.

Don Pedro: Why, what’s the matter?

Don John: I came here to tell you, that Hero has betrayed you.

Claudio: Who, Hero?

Don John: Yes, everyone’s Hero.

Claudio: Disloyal?

Don John: Disloyal is too good to describe her behavior. See for yourself…come and watch her bedroom window tonight and when you see someone visiting her, see if you still want to marry her tomorrow.

Host: Everyone still can’t believe Claudio fell for this! How could he ever imagine sweet Hero committing such a sin!? Well, keep watching to find out if the scheme was taken through with. (smiles)

Video Clip Playing:

Borachio: Tonight, I courted Margaret, Hero’s maid. I called her Hero. Those who were watching, such as Don Pedro and Claudio, saw her lean out of Hero’s window and bid me goodnight over and over again.

--Video Clip jumps to last piece of evidence—

Conrade: Testing, Testing. Pheww it works!

Borachio (confessing to Don Pedro and Claudio): Don Pedro, let Claudio kill me for this. I deceived your eyes and everyone else’s. Dogberry and Verges, two fools may I add, overheard me confessing to Conrade how, following Don John’s plan, used Margaret in the name of Hero, to slander her. I am very sorry and wish to receive what a villain deserves.

Host: At least we know the truth and there you have it… full proof of this outrageous and hurtful scandal all caused by the evil Borachio, Conrade, and Don John! Goodnight and hope you enjoyed this exclusive segment of E! Today. I’m Chelsea Handler, your host, thanks for watching.

April 19th 2010--Updates on Unit

After we got back from spring break we split into four different categories depending on what our scripts were about. Since we didn't have our script's back from Mr.Thompson, we could not do much in the past 2 classes, so we just discussed what we planned to do. I was put into the gossip group with Ha Young, Rebekah, and Jill. We discussed if we were going to include everybody's video or just pick one. So far, we have not decided on this, but I don't want my script to be made into a video production, which leaves Jill's and Rebekah's scripts. In the previous class we listed what props we would need and how many people, as well as where it would be filmed if we were to do that particular video. We haven't definitely picked which video or if we are combining them, but we plan to today since we get our scripts back from Mr.Thompson. I think it will be exciting to read the scripts in our group and plan the video production, which I look forward to in the near future.

Criterion A- Investigation: Shakespeare

Criterion A

This unit that will last until May 12th, 2010, is about modern Shakespeare. In English class we just finished Much Ado About Nothing by Shakespeare, so our final project is to create a video presentation of this Shakespeare play that will appeal to modern day viewers.
Before we start planning our video, we have to write our scripts about a scandal that takes place in the book, which will be written in English class. This will then be used to help us create a humorous and exciting video presentation based on the book. Over this long unit, we will be working hard on accomplishing our goal of creating a video presentation of a Shakespeare play that will appeal to modern viewers.

Materials that will be used include a video camera, costumes, tiny props, actors and actresses, and backdrops. The costumes should resemble the time period of the book, but still be able to appeal to the modern day viewers.

Unit Question:
How can we create a video presentation of a Shakespeare play that will appeal to modern day viewers?

This unit question relates to the project because the English and Design Technology (DT) classes are working together to produce the video presentation. In English class we just finished Much Ado About Nothing, so we are trying to produce a quality video presentation that appeals to modern day viewers. We will do this by creating a TV show that talks about the different scandals that take place in the book. We have noticed that modern day people enjoy the thrill of hearing about scandal and thought that it would help to accomplish our goal by talking about the scandals in Much Ado About Nothing.

AOI: Approaches to Learning
Learner Profile: Communicators

The Area of Interaction (AOI) fits into this unit because we are trying to learn more about Shakespeare’s writings by learning different aspects and the different meanings behind his writings. The Learner Profile, which is communicators, fits into this unit too because we are trying to communicate to modern day viewers of what Shakespeare means and how there is always scandal. We are trying to relate the book to modern times.

I think the study of Shakespeare is important to help us understand what a great writer he is and what his thoughts were like at that time. It shows us different ways of writing and explains how they used to talk during that time period. I expect to learn how to relate old writings into modern times and how to be able to create a video presentation of a Shakespeare play that will appeal to modern day viewers.

This is the first time I have read a book of Shakespeare. I actually thought it was quite hard at first to understand what was going on and the vocabulary use, but in the end I managed to comprehend the book. Other than reading Much Ado About Nothing by Shakespeare, I have not had any experience with him, but I have heard about his great works from people that enjoy his books.

Going back to the unit question, I think that if we relate something from the time of the play to the modern times, such as scandal, we can accomplish a video presentation of a Shakespeare play that will appeal to modern day viewers. Of course everyone enjoys the thrill of hearing about scandal and how people have messed up nowadays, so I think the answer is that you have to relate something from modern times to the time frame when the play was taken place.

Design Specifications
1. The stories must be filmed and all students must play a significant part in the making of the video (script-writing, costumes, background, filming, editing, etc.)

2. The video must be based on the play, using the names and events in the play exactly as they happen.

3. The scripts must be written in modern day English in the format of a news show (interviews, documentaries, news reports, talk shows, etc.)

List of what I need to know before researching
· How to make a quality video presentation
· Camera angles, framing, length, movement
· Filming tips
· Editing tips
How to make a quality video presentation
- have a quality script accepted by the producers
- then create a story board that will mimic the step by step movements of how the video will be filmed
- afterwards find the locations where the video will be set
- then the casting crew will be chosen
- after hiring different works, you start shooting the scenes
- after all the shots have been made, the editor goes through the scenes and edits parts out or put the scenes together
Camera Angles, framing, length, movement
- extreme long shot/ establishing shot: this shot is normally used to set the setting and place. it is a wide shot that shows a lot of the landscape
- long shot: is like establishing shot, but a bit more specific than the broad setting
- full shot: shows the all of the cast and helps us to get an idea of their relationships and what their costumes are like
- medium shot: presents the characters from the waist up, to get a more specific idea than the full shot
- close-up/ personal shot: this shot is even more specific than the full shot and medium shot. It just displays one character close-up
- extreme close up: this shot can either be a close up of the personal shot or an object. this can cause a different attitude and mood for the viewer or audience
- the bird’s eye view: this name comes from the view a bird sees looking down, so this is an angle that shows the viewers what is going on from the top
- high angle: this angle is not as extreme as the bird’s eye view, but still shows a scene from above
- eye level: this is the most commonly used angle in movie production because it allows the audience to feel comfortable viewing the movie at a level they see everything at in real life.
- low angle: low angle is the opposite of high angle, so instead of viewing the characters from above, they are viewing them from an angle looking up at them
- Dutch angle: also known as a canted angle, which is when the camera is title to create the feeling of instability or disorientation to the viewers
- canted angle: this angle is used to normally show instability or a different point of view. The camera is usually tilted for this angle
- panning: this can be used to follow a moving object and capture a scene in a horizontal movement
- tilts: this is like the panning shot, except it moves vertically
- dolly shots/ tracking shot: this shot can be used for movement. It involves a trolley or track that helps move the camera around the scene to view everything in detail
- hand held shots: these shots aren’t made on tripods but as if a person is holding the camera and moving around.
- crane shots: this shot is mostly seen at the end of a video presentation when a crane is used to move the camera upwards
- zoom lenses: this is capable of changing the magnification of the shot either in a quick or slow movement
- aerial shot: this can be even higher than a crane shot, such as been taken in a helicopter displaying a large scene to the viewers.
Filming Tips
- use a tripod to create steady shots that are clear and visible to the viewer
- before choosing locations pay attention to the background noise, such as cars
- if you mess up while filming, don’t say you will fix it later, do it over
- use the white balance setting on the cameras (helps with the lighting)
Editing Tips
- Cut: one scene or image is replaced by another one. One of the most common editing used.
- Cross-dissolve: dissolves and image or scene to another
- Fade-up: this involves when one image or scene fades into another
- Add sound or music effects
- There are many more!
Materials needed
- A camera
- Computer
- Microphone
- Props
- Costumes

Student Jobs
- Editor
- Filmer
- Costume designer
- Person in charge of props
Question
1. What is important for a video presentation?
Good sound and lighting. Appropriate costumes. Visble. Realistic setting/backdrop. Has to get the right mood.
To have a good video presentation you need a good plot, good setting, good acting, good lighting, good camera, good camera perspective, well filmed, realistic costumes and back drop. It should also be as interesting, funny and understandable as possible.
Design Specifications
- Should be funny or interesting
- Should be not to long but not to short
- entertaining

Yes the poster does include important questions and answers that others would like to know.

10) Is the poster detailed and relevant to the project?
Yes.
Yes.

Overall, I am pleased with people’s reactions of my product because I did spend some time working on it. I also enjoyed researching the topic Coca Cola because I found out things that I never knew about. The process of creating my poster and the improvements are talked about below.

Criteria A: Investigate

At the beginning of this unit we got a few worksheets about our invention, in this case I got Coca Cola. This gave us a lot of the main information to do with our invention. After completing this packet we were required to come up with a list of questions about the invention and the inventor; this is where the investigating comes in. We had to do research in order to find the answers to our well thought out questions. An example of one of my questions was, “Is the same logo used as when Coca Cola was first invented?”. After finding the answers to my questions we had to start thinking about what we wanted our final project to be (an essay, video, audio, artwork, PowerPoint, presentation, etc.). Since we weren’t designing anything, this led us straight to Criteria C, which is planning.

Criteria C: Plan

This criterion expects us to create a plan for working on our final product. It should be described in detail and logical steps. I made mine in a graph with the columns consisting of the dates we could work on it, the steps I will take, the time, the materials I need, resources I would need, and the changes I have made in my plan. My plan can be viewed earlier in my blog. I think my plan is very detailed and well-thought out. As you can see, I made a few changes and I went through my product faster than I expected, but in the end it did take me a while and I added a few things that weren’t on my plan.

Criteria D: Create

After constructing my plan, I started to think about the layout and how I wanted my poster to look. I knew I wanted to include the Coca Cola logo and a picture of the can. First, I wrote out the information in pencil and then went over it in marker. Then I found a picture of the Coca Cola logo and go to work on trying to make my drawing look like the actual logo. I also drew a Coca Cola can and glued on a picture of Dr. John Pemberton, the inventor. My finishing touch was the background, which is a zig-zagged cut out as a border. I spent a lot of time on this poster, especially the background, and am pleased with how it turned out.

Suggested Improvements:

We all know that many things can be improved on, so on my poster I think I could have kept my white poster in better condition and not so crinkled. I also think I could have included a few more facts about Coca Cola, but overall at it presented the important information and was straight to the point.
My presentation of the poster was done very poorly, in my opinion, because I get very nervous and tend to speed through to get it over with. This is the main thing I have to improve on and you may not believe it, but I have improved over the years of presenting in front of people.

Coca Cola and Our Unit Question

In our technology class, we were each given different inventions to research and study to help us answer our unit question, which is, “How do inventors come up with their ideas and create inventions?”. So far we have been handed out a worksheet with some information on our topic and exercises to complete. After accomplishing this task, we had to come up with an adequate amount of questions relevant to our topic that we could find the answers for on the web. These questions and answers are all displayed on our blogs. Our last task is to create a PowerPoint, essay, or video to show the class how our inventor was able to come up with an idea and invent something.

My topic that was chosen is Coca Cola. As you may find out, Coca Cola was invented by Dr. John Pemberton in his backyard by mixing cocaine and caffeine-rich kola nuts. Considering that he was a pharmacist, he wanted to create a medicine in the form of a drink. After hearing that cocaine helped digestion, as well as many other ailments, he knew that he wanted to use this drug as one of his main ingredients. In his backyard in 1886, he put cocaine and caffeine-rich kola nuts into a kettle and created the invention known as Coca Cola.

Some inventions may be trial and error, but Dr. John Pemberton knew that he wanted to create a medicine in the drink form. By having a goal, he set out to invent Coca Cola without knowing the huge success it was to have in years later. Referring back to our unit question, which is “How do inventors come up with their ideas and create inventions?”, we can see that inventors have a general idea of what kind of invention they want to invent. Once they know what they would like to create, they set out to research all the possibilities that could help them invent their invention; in this case it happened to be cocaine that Dr. John Pemberton wanted to include.

Coca Cola- Q & A

- How much money did John Pemberton make his first year of selling Coca Cola?
The money made totaled to $50, but his expenses added up to $70, which ended up in a loss of money.

- First Coca Cola was only available in America. What was the second country it was available in?
From all Coca Cola’s publicity, it became available in Canada at the turn of the century.(1900)

- Nowadays, how many Coca Cola is sold a day?
Nowadays, more than one billion Coke’s are sold, showing its huge success, even today.

- What are some slogans Coca Cola have used for advertising?
“Coca Cola delicious, refreshing, exhilarating.” (1886)
“Coca Cola revives and sustains.” (1905)
“Pause and refresh yourself.” (1924)
“It’s the real thing.” (used first in 1948)
“Things go better with coke.” (1963)
“I’d like to buy the world a coke.” (1971—actually the name of a song)

- Is the same logo used as when Coca Cola was first invented?
Yes it is still used and was created by Frank Robinson, Pemberton’s bookkeeper. The name came from the words “cocaine” and “kola”.

-When coke was first sold, what kind of bottles or cups did they come in?
When they were first sold in Jacob's Pharmacy, they were bought for 5 cents in a glass.

- When did they start putting Coca Cola in bottles?
In 1894, Joseph Biedenharn came up with the idea of bottling Coke, although Asa Chandler, the owner of Coke at the time, wasn't too enthusiastic.

-Was Coke invented during trial and error or was there a purpose?
After John Pemberton invented different medicines, he had the idea of creating a medicine as a drink. He heard many good things about cocaine, such as it helped digestion, so decided to use it as one of the main ingredients of Coca Cola. In 1886, in his backyard, he put cocaine and caffeine-rich kola nuts into a kettle and invented Coke.

- Why did Coca Cola's recipe change in the 1900's?
In the early 1900's, cocaine was banned in Coca Cola because of the American Health Regulations.

- Why was Coca Cola not a great success in the beginning?
At first, Coke was not successful because of the lack of advertising. After the Coca Cola rights were sold to Asa Chandler, he aggressively advertised throughout the United States and sold coke syrup to companies.

- Fact :)
1) Coca Cola helped shape the modern idea of Santa Claus.

Self-Regulating Heater (Unit: Inventions and Inventors)

Evaluation
This is my first time using the design cycle and “inventing” something! This project was quite interesting and showed that we are capable of creating inventions that we would enjoy. Before we decided on the idea of a self-regulating heater, we had a few other awesome ideas, but thought that this would be more useful. Although our group was talkative and very social we got all our work done and cooperated well with each other. I think our idea was realistic and can be invented because it is made from parts that are already in this world, such as a heater and infrared camera. During our presentation, we discussed what our product would be like and showed the 9th grade a drawing of our self-regulated heater. The area of interaction (AOI) is human ingenuity which asks us “why and how do we create?” and “what are the consequences?”. We create because we are imaginative and are constantly thinking about how to improve things or what else we need in this world. Right now the world is full of technology, which makes us lazy because we invent things so we don’t need to do anything. Consequences of inventing include, making us lazy and give us more health problems. For example, cell phones are bad for our body because of the send radio waves, giving us brain damage. Although we think all this technology helps us, it is creating bad habits and making people use things that harm the human body. The learner profile for this project was being a risk taker and I do believe that I was a risk taker by trying to imagine and invention that I would want in my own house. Usually I don’t take risks and am afraid of believing that something of mine is actually good, so I think this helped me realize that take risks, show and discuss your ideas, and putting your thoughts on paper.
Criteria A: Investigate
While investigating what we wanted to improve in our lives, we came up with two ideas, 1) A Self-Regulating Heater, and 2) A Voice Activated Football (Soccer ball). We ended up choosing a self-regulating heater because we thought it would be cool and more people would purchase it than a voice activated soccer ball.
During our investigation we tried to find out if a self-regulating heater had been invented and what type of infrared camera should be used to find people’s body temperature. We needed to come up with a common household item that was a realistic improvement of something already invented. We decided to choose a heater and make it more advanced because we planned on making it more efficient so you do not spend money on heat you do not want.
Through our research, we found self-regulating heaters that are set to one temperature and don’t use an infrared camera to change the room temperature accordingly, so we made ours a more advanced version so that the temperature changes with your own body temperature. We chose to include an infrared camera in our heater because then you wouldn’t have to change the heater manually, it would just adjust to your body temperature to create the right room temperature. We searched what type of infrared camera we could use and found that the uncooled infrared detector would be used best for this purpose.
Throughout all our research, we did not find anything about a self-regulated heater using an infrared camera, but found information to prove that it is a realistic invention that could be used in everyday life.

Criteria B: Design
Our design is basically a regular heater but includes an infrared camera located in the middle of the original design and also has a manual way of controlling the temperature on the side. It is cost-efficient, child safe, portable, and runs on electricity. We would install an uncooled infrared camera into our heater to calculate people’s temperature, and then it would automatically adjust your own temperature accordingly. Our child safety feature includes rubber edges on any sharp corners. One of the questions that came up was “how would it change the temperature in a room of many people?”. It seems logical that the infrared camera would find the temperature of everyone and average the temperature.
Our final design is just like the regular heater, but includes an infrared camera and comes it a variety of sizes and colors. We also came up with a line called “Da Fonk”. These include designs for children, which come in bright colors and different shapes likes snails and flowers.
I believe this invention will be useful in everyday life and will cancel our all problems with manual heaters.
Criteria C: Plan
Our plan was to create a poster that showed the different features of our heaters and the “Da Fonk” line for children. We made sure we made it bright colored and easy to read, although someone crushed it and accidentally spilt water on it creating a smudge in the bottom right hand corner of our poster.
We first planned to do a rough sketch of what we wanted our poster to be like, and then neatly drew out all our designs. Next we had to label and describe our designs and their features. It was then colored and presented to the class.
Criteria D: Create
During the creating process we need to produce a series of tests to evaluate our self-regulating heater and ask ourselves questions that will help evaluate our product. While coming up with questions we were looking at our poster to figure out how we want to evaluate ourselves.
We started asking ourselves if the poster explains our self-regulating heater well, if it is colorful, if it is neat, if our final product has changed throughout the design cycle, does our poster clearly represent the idea of our product, and what could be improved.
All of these questions passed our evaluation test, although some could have been improved and things could have been neater. We asked a few people about our product and was successful in thinking that it could be a realistic improvement of a heater.
